The big bummer was that we had somehow missed the SUPER SECRET SIGN-UP DATE runDisney Virtual Summer Series. A VIRTUAL RACE. WHERE YOU CAN JUST MAKE AS MANY MEDALS AS YOU NEED. It makes TOTAL SENSE that runDisney would want to sell out during a pandemic and not make room for all the folks who had wanted to participate in any of their races. Not like runDisney to pull something like that, AT ALL (sarcasm). It was beginning to look like I was going to have to be disappointed.
We did the 5k very early on a lovely Friday morning on the Jordan River Trail (of course). As we get further into fall, I get less and less upset about the lack of shade cover and try to enjoy the magnificent mountain views.
Chad had found this race several years ago and signed us up and apparently we were still on their emailing list. I was glad to see that this is a yearly event and the medals are super cool EVERY YEAR. The only thing that would make them cooler is if Michael J Fox came with them.
July was the month where we really had to start getting up early to beat the heat. I mean early early. Like 5:45 am to get ready to go running. Once everyone with children stops laughing at me I will continue. But it was 100% worth it to be getting done when it was EIGHTY […]
With the excellent May weather and Utah people still holding strong to their decision to spend as much time out of doors as possible, we still had trouble with using local parks for our races. The reason I enjoy using parks or running the trail near Kyla’s house is because I don’t like running with a camelbak. Then, while picking up a virtual race packet at Salt Lake Running company, I found a lovely handheld water bottle and pouch, and suddenly I was more than happy to traverse long stretches of running trail. That presented us with the Jordan River Trail which is smooth enough, flat enough, and gosh darn it, we like it. And in all of our times running the trail we still hadn’t come across any dead bodies NOR had we been murdered. So we used it for both virtual races.
As I am a very stubborn person, I wasn’t about to let my aversion for running races on courses I had to plan, with water I had to bring, and cheerfulness I had to invent, get in the way of running 20 races this year. The problem we ran (hahah) into was that everyone seemed to be taking the CoVid-19 precautions / stay-at-home orders to mean: go outside when you’ve never done so before! Congregate with your neighbors and all their children and don’t wear masks! Lick toilet seats! Or I don’t know what the voices in some people’s heads are saying, that’s just mine.
March started with rumors that COVID-19 was going to start shutting things down. For some reason I didn’t really think that it would affect the small races we had signed up for this month. I mean, it’s just me and Kyla, and sometimes Andrea, running together. Everyone else is definitely social distancing way way far in front of us.
